ASC Students Win Boren Study Abroad Scholarships
Four arts and sciences undergraduates were selected for a NSEP Boren Undergraduate Study Abroad Awardfor 2012-2013. Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars study less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.This year’s student award recipients are:
Sofia Bachman, majoring in Spanish and Russian, with minors in Chinese and theatre, will study Russian at The Russian State Pedagogical (Gersten) University.
Zoe Maani, majoring inArabic Languages and Literatures and African-American and African Studies, will study Arabic at the University of Jordan.
Cory Sabet, majoring in International Relations and Chinese Languages and Literatures, will study Mandarin Chinese at the Shaanxi Normal University and the Beijing Language and Culture University.
Brian Yeh, majoring in Economics and Political Science, with a minor in Chinese Languages and Literatures, will study Mandarin Chinese with the C.V. Starr - Middlebury School in China, hosted at the Capital Normal University in Beijing.
Boren Scholarshipsare funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.
