Why choose linguistics?

As the scientific study of language, linguistics helps us increase our knowledge and gain a better understanding of the world we live in. Linguistics is an extremely diverse area, often intersecting with anthropology, computer science and engineering, psychology, speech and hearing science and more. As a result, students develop important skills such as analytical and critical thinking, problem solving, argumentation, data collection and analysis and written and oral expression.

What can you do with this degree?

Through its emphasis on critical thinking, analytical skills and language, a major in linguistics is designed to provide excellent preparation for graduate work in related disciplines such as cognitive psychology, anthropology, philosophy, speech pathology and computer science.

The study of linguistics also allows students to consider careers in such fields as scientific or scholarly research, language teaching, information technology, publishing, communications, speech pathology, law and foreign service.
