Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Amgen STEM Learning Center

The Amgen STEM Learning Center (ASLC) supports undergraduate students in STEM courses through tutoring, collaborative learning, and student leadership development.

Tutoring FAQs

We have tutors who can support students in the following courses:

  • Biology 1111, 1112, 1113, and 1114
  • Chemistry 1206, 1208, 1210, and 1220
  • Math 1140, 1141, 1151, and 1152
  • Physics 1248, 1250, and 1251

Our group tutoring is offered as a 1-credit course called ASC 1194. Here is a brief overview:

  • Group tutoring sessions are 80 minutes long and meet once a week
  • You'll meet in-person in Ramseyer Hall at the same day/time each week
  • Enrollment is small: only 4-8 students per group
  • Sessions are led by an undergraduate student who previously excelled in the course and has received training to provide group tutoring
  • The first group tutoring sessions will meet during Week 2 of the semester

Group tutoring sessions are distinct from other courses like lecture and recitation. Each group tutoring session is tailored to your needs: every week, you and your groupmates will submit requests to your tutor, and your tutor will use those requests to develop a customized group tutoring session. You’ll participate in a combination of group discussions and collaborative problem-solving prepared in advance by your tutor.

If you would like tutoring that is more informal or less structured, please read about our drop-in tutoring services below.

Currently, students can choose from sessions that meet on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. The available time slots are:

  • 8-9:20 a.m.
  • 9:35-10:55 a.m.
  • 11:10 a.m. to12:30 p.m.
  • 12:45-2:05 p.m.
  • 2:20-3:40 p.m.
  • 3:55-5:15 p.m.
  • 5:30-6:50 p.m.
  • 7:05-8:25 p.m.
  • 8:40-10 p.m. (Wednesday and Thursday only)

Unlike other courses, you will not be able to self-enroll into ASC 1194 through BuckeyeLink. To request enrollment in group tutoring, please fill out this form.

Please note: availability of each time slot is subject to change based on enrollment and our ability to staff the section. If you request to enroll in group tutoring, please select multiple options that would work with your schedule.

Weekly group tutoring sessions are about more than just preparing for an exam: they’re also about building a community with your classmates. The more you work together and get to know each other, the more productively you’ll be able to learn and study each week.

Because group tutoring is a course, attendance is required every week to earn credit for attending group studies. There are some exceptions:

  • You won’t meet when other classes are cancelled, such as on holidays and during breaks.
  • During weeks with a major assessment (exam, checkpoint, etc.), you’ll use an alternate meeting format if that assessment is scheduled before your group meets: your group can either plan to meet at an alternate time ahead of the assessment, or you can use our drop-in tutoring services.
  • Two absences are permitted for any reason; no documentation is required.
  • Students have until the 5th Friday to drop the course without receiving a W on their transcript

If you would like tutoring that is more informal or less structured, please read about our drop-in tutoring services below.

Group tutoring (ASC 1194) is graded S/U, which does not affect your GPA. You can read more about Ohio State’s grade policies on the advising website.

Group tutoring (ASC 1194) has the typical fees associated with a 1 credit hour course. If you are enrolled in 12-17 credit hours, your total tuition will not change. You can read more about tuition costs on the registrar website.

If you are currently enrolled in 18 credit hours and would like to enroll in group tutoring, please reach out to aslc@osu.edu
